Silicone Bakeware
Corner bakeries, fancy restaurants, the kitchens of friends and relatives, wherever one goes where cooking and baking are done, brilliantly-colored pieces of silicone kitchenware and bakeware are prevalent.
Even though silicone was discovered many, many years ago, it was not until a few years ago, this resilient substance made its entrance at mainstream venues meant for anyone, not just people working in the merchandizing or production areas. Today, wherever kitchenware is sold, dazzling silicone kitchen and baking products are found in abundance.
Silicone kitchenware and bakeware come in a vast assortment of colors, from the most subtle yellow to blazing neon green or orange (and everything in between). Not only are the silicon pieces colorful, but they are also capable of temporarily molding to any shape to which one might try to twist. Silicone boasts of so many advantages: heat disperses rapidly; clean-up is as easy as 1-2-3. Silicone is so versatile one can wash it at the kitchen sink or simply drop it into the dishwasher. Silicone goods last much longer than say, traditional cookie sheets, muffin tins, etc. Its biggest claim to fame is the incredible range of temperatures it can endure, approximately 40º F. (-40º C.) to 600º F. (316º C.).
Probably the easiest silicone kitchen accessory to get used to is the wonderful oven mitt. One would never dream of plunging one’s old-time quilted mitt-clad hand into a pot of boiling, roiling water. Ouch! But with silicone oven mitts one can do just that. silicone mitts come in varying lengths , covering from wrist to elbow. Also, silicone will repel both water and oil, lessening the chance of getting a scald burn.
Kitchen twine has been replaced by silicone cords which do their job superbly. They are great for trussing up a large piece of meat. One can cut up a green salad with the greatest of ease when using a silicone salad knife that looks much like a cake server with serrated teeth. If one is in a silly mood, there are dozens of whimsically-shaped ice cube trays, cookie cutters, cake pans, and so forth.
Another advantage of silicone kitchen items is that they are non-stick and should give one no problems if they are prepped previous to their first use.
There are so many silicone kitchenware and bakeware items, it would be virtually impossible to list every one, but a representative list would include spatulas, both single and double-ended; funnels; colanders capable of collapsing for easier storage; pan holders to slip over a hot handle; warmers/steamers; cake pans; trivets; rolling pins; egg rings in whimsical shapes, and the list goes on.
Examine the array of available silicone products, and be daring. Buy something you have never before used. Maybe now is the time to try Auntie’s famous recipe for lasagna.
